· Have an interesting opening and conclusion. · State your purpose clearly and maintain focus throughout. · Organize paragraphs around main points with logically sequenced details. · Include interesting supporting facts. · Use interesting words that will engage your audience.

· Use a variety of sentence structures with proper subject and verb agreement. · Write in well-organized paragraphs. · Use correct capitalization and punctuation. · Use correct spelling.

· Indent paragraphs. Better watch out for this one! · Never use a pronoun (he/him, she/her, they/them, we/us) without first IDENTIFYING exactly who you are referring to. Better watch out for this one! · Each paragraph should have at least 5 well-written sentences. You need a good topic sentence (who, what, where, why) and 4 supporting sentences. Your supporting sentences should be descriptive. Better watch out for this one! · When revising your writing, be on the lookout for names or words that are used too frequently. Find a good synonym for the overused word. · Before you write your final draft, look for words that can be replaced with more descriptive and interesting words. Better watch out for “nice,” “like,” “good,” etc. Those words are not descriptive.
